Meet Your Attorney
Originally from Germany, Barbara Selje built her life around family, resilience, and service long before pursuing her legal career.
She met her husband, a U.S. Army helicopter pilot, while he was stationed in Fulda, Germany, and their military life eventually brought them to Williamsburg, Virginia, where they raised their three children.
After becoming a Gold Star family in 2011, Barbara chose to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming an attorney. She graduated magna cum laude from the College of William & Mary and earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond School of Law.
Through her work with the University of Richmond’s Family and Children Legal Clinic and the Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia, she gained extensive experience helping families through difficult legal challenges.
Barbara is a zealous advocate, passionate about helping families navigate life’s toughest transitions with compassion, strength, and clear guidance.

How We Help Williamsburg Families
Divorce
Ending a marriage is never easy. Virginia requires specific grounds and waiting periods before a divorce can be finalized. We help you understand your options, protect your interests, and work toward a resolution, including separation agreements, property division, and settlement negotiations.
Military
Divorce
Divorce is complicated. Military divorce adds layers most attorneys never learn. Federal laws govern how retirement pay is divided, whether you keep TRICARE, and how deployment affects custody. As a military spouse and Gold Star widow, Barbara understands these challenges firsthand.
Custody &
Visitation
Nothing matters more than your relationship with your children. Virginia courts decide custody based on what serves your child's best interests. We help you build a strong case for the parenting arrangement that protects your bond and provides stability, including legal custody,
physical custody, and joint legal/physical custody.
Child & Spousal Support
Support calculations follow Virginia guidelines, but the numbers do not always tell the full story. We make sure the court sees your real financial picture and fight for arrangements that are fair to you and sustainable for your family for spousal support, child support, and paternity.
